What a time to be alive!
Are you a Star Wars fan? It’s the kind of movie franchise you either love, or hate. I love it.
Star Wars first hit theaters in May, 1977, and it was groundbreaking. It’s the first movie I can recall seeing at the drive-in. Man, let me tell you, the special effects were riveting, something not seen before. It made a huge impact on my young life.
I was a little girl at the time, but that movie began my love affair with technology. I wanted to go to outer space and ride around in a great big spaceship with a million lights. For one Halloween, I dressed up as Master Yoda, complete with my very own light saber.
Early Computer
Some time later, my mother bought me and my sister this little box that hooked up to the tv, sort of like a video game. It came with a book full of codes to type on the screen, which produced very cool animations. For me, it was all the rave. I spent a gazillion hours “coding”.
A bit further down the road, WebTv came out. You didn’t need a computer to access email and play games. It was another convenient little box that plugged into the tv.
Music and Film
During my Star Wars fixation days, music tech evolved. We went from listening to records, and those clunky 8-track tapes, to cassette tapes. Movies were now on VHS. Entertainment that we once had to enjoy at home quickly turned portable. Did you have a Walkman or Boombox? We took the party wherever we went!
Pretty soon, we were introduced to cds and dvds. MP3s turned the music world upside down. Our favorite songs and movies became easy to store and carry, and played more efficiently.
Do I even need to mention what it meant to have access to the new invention known as cable tv? The world had begun getting smaller by the day.
World’s Quantum Leap
Civilization did a hop-skip once the Internet became a regular household addition. People across the world were no longer just folks on the news or mythical-like beings. They were real-life people that we could get to know. We could learn about other cultures and see that people are more alike than they are different.
Information that was once only in libraries was only a button-click away. Education became remotely available. Businesses transitioned from brick and mortar entities to virtual powerhouses.
Mobile Phones
Kids today don’t know the struggle of growing up with landline phones. There were inconveniences like calling someone and getting a busy signal. Plus, we had no clue who was calling. I remember all the late nights giggling with my friends. Then my mother would pick up the phone and yell, “Get off the damn phone this late at night!”
All that went out the window with mobile phones, or cellular phones. Not only are cell phones private, but today’s phone are “smart” and operate as mini computers.
We can talk to a friend down the street, or even in another country. We run businesses, take courses, and schedule our lives on one handheld device. We’re taking photos and recording videos, capturing moments in time like never before.
Purpose
Now, I’ve found my purpose: helping others up-level both their inner and outer environments. You see, I have a deep appreciation for the blessings that are technology. I’m fascinated by all the cool devices and conveniences enabling us to create anything we want.
Most don’t know this, but I have a profound hearing impairment that keeps me isolated much of the time.
Cue the technology. I have found that art is a form of communication that transcends language. Through it, I can convey the gamut of human emotions and connection. Color, line, and form say it all in a way that anyone can “hear”.
Art inspires, uplifts, and ushers in hope. And, guess what… I use technology to create it. I’m a digital abstract artist, combining my love of techy things with my desire to make the world a better place. You can find some of my work here.
I also use technology for mindset mentorship through writing online. I share stories and lessons learned from my life, as well as from my education. Each blog post I write is for whomever the universe aligns with the message. I know those who need it will find it. That’s the way this energy works!
So, there you have it. The way to create all these things has always existed. But we weren’t made aware of it until civilization was ready for it. I’m so thankful for being alive at such a significant moment in time. Let’s embrace these wondrous opportunities to make a positive impact in the lives of others.
